WeBL is free and supports itself through advertising. But I have spent a lot of time building and maintaining the site, and some people have actually asked if they can pay me. There are a few additional services you can pay for.
For $15 you can navigate the site for one year without seeing (most) ads. The ads at the bottom of the page will still appear (they are link exchanges and are needed to keep new people coming to the site). Also, ads on "static pages" (mostly help pages) will still appear. But the ads at the top of most pages will be shut off. In addition, I'll add $10 to your "professional" account (see below).
There is now a professional region where all fighters have been paid for. There is one additional feature in this region ("taunts"), but competition is more intense than it is in most of the other regions. Also, fighters are randomly generated (you can't pick your fighter's stats), so the population of fighters is more realistic. There are also a few small improvements to the game mechanics that couldn't be implemented in other regions without disruption.
Professional fighters cost $2 each. You can keep a fighter as long as you wish, but may not transfer the fighter to another gym.
It is possible to receive full fight reports by e-mail (rather than just links to the fight report at this site) at a cost of $10 per gym. (This was the original format for all fight reports, but the bandwidth costs became prohibitive.)
Occasionally, players request a new page and chip in (usually $100) to induce me to create the page. Examples include the "fighter ducker's page", the fight plan cleanup page, and the retired fighter's page.
